"Perfect" binding. Ha!

The book arrived today, fresh from the printer, and the glued binding is already coming apart. Keep up the good work, Springer Verlag.

Why do authors of high-quality texts like this one put up with Springer's shoddy workmanship? Why not publish with the AMS or Cambridge or Oxford or Princeton instead?

UPDATE: Okay, I'm still miffed about Springer's cheap production values, but I've got to bump the star-rating up to 5: The content of this book is simply outstanding. If you want a nice-looking copy, buy the pdfs from Springer and print it yourself on your home printer.

UPDATE 2: My student's paperback copy just arrived, and there's really nothing to complain about in the quality of the printing. It may be a tad light, but it is sharp and doesn't have that reflective toner that helps make my copy look so ugly. My recommendation now is: Order the paperback and keep your fingers crossed that your print-on-demand run turns out as nice as my student's.… (mehr)
