In an evocative and moving story, hidden family secrets are at the heart of this absorbing novel as Katherine prepares for her widowed father’s second marriage. Candida Clark’s fine writing creates a threatening atmosphere as Katherine, a photographer on a routine assignment in Gabon, unknowingly stumbles across illegal activities being carried out by one of her father’s companies.
On returning to England, where she is to photograph his wedding at their family home, three generations of the family come together. Katherine still mourns the death of her mother when she was a child and the faces the prospect of losing the family home that means so much to her as her father prepares to relocate to America with his new wife. The day of the wedding reveals deceits and secrets and results in choices that will change the lives of the family.

A good book, but I felt like I was waiting for something big to happen only it never did.

"She misses this life she has never possessed, and feels a pang of yearning for a love she has only known in the body of a story and in no other place - in no other person but herself, reading."½
