رغم المعلومات الجميلة التي قدمها الكتاب عن آليات التصوير والإخراج والجهود العملاقة التي بذلت لتقديم عمل بهذا المستوى .. لكن الكتاب كان يفتقر لما يجعله كتاباً بمعنى الكلمة حيث لم يكن يحتوي الا على مجموعة من اللقاءات مع بعض الشخصيات المؤثرة في نجاح العمل .. باختصار كان عبارة عن فيلم وثائقي ولكن بصيغة مكتوبة.

Various factions plot to gain political control over a fantasy world.

This season feels a bit like it's stalling for time. Which is weird to say, because a lot of really huge things happen. A couple storylines - the ones about characters in the north - have fully functional arcs, but I don't really care about those characters. The good characters' stories are just starting to get going when the season stops abruptly. Basically, seasons 1-4 were one big 40-episode season, and season five is like the beginning of a second giant season. I envy people first watching the show 5 years from now, who actually get to watch complete stories.

I'm not going to count this for my reading total because most of it is photos, but I'd recommend it to everyone as a great companion book to either the tv series or the book Game of Thrones. Beautifully illustrated, with comments by the producers, actors and George R.R. Martin, detailed introductions of each character plus family trees, an absolute joy!

I'm reluctantly giving it an A instead of an A plus. I loved watching it, but there are a few major problems. Some key plot points are unexplained. Martin's obsession with incest is off-putting. Some of the villains are senselessly evil just for the sake of being villains (huge pet peeve of mine). Oddly, the biggest problem is that there is a ridiculous amount of gratuitous sex and nudity, to the point where it becomes funny. The general rule seems to be that if there's no good reason for characters to not be having sex during their scene, then what are their clothes still on for goddamnit? HBO viewers demand titties! Fantasy is always treading a fine line between immersing and silly, so a show like this that takes itself Very Seriously couldn't do much worse than give you a reason to laugh at it.

I just don't seem to get as excited about Game of Thrones as I should. It's the kind of epic chess game that I like. There are a lot of great characters. (Although there are also some extremely boring ones. I'd never known it was possible to be dour while scaling a cliff.) I think the problem might be the wait between seasons. It's one big story, and watching one season at a time is kind of like watching one scene of a movie at a time. Just when I start to get drawn in, it's over for a year and I'm out of it again.

Näinä aikoina varsin harva on voinut välttyä kuulemasta tv-sarjasta Valtaistuinpeli, joka tunnetusti perustuu George R. R. Martinin kirjasarjaan Jään ja tulen laulu. Bryan Cogmanin kirja Valtaistuinpelin kulisseissa kertoo siitä, miten tuota sarjaa on tehty ensimmäisen kauden aikana ja vähän alkua toistakin kautta. Ruuduillahan kolmas kausi on jo päättynyt ja fanit odottavat neljättä malttamattomina.

Kirja esittelee sarjan tapahtumien kannalta olennaisia paikkoja ja näyttää, miten Pohjois-Irlannin tai Maltan kuvauspaikoista on loihdittu Westerosin piirteitä silmällä pitäen katu-uskottavan näköisiä. Arkkitehtuurin lisäksi myös puvustusta tarkastellaan. Kumpaakin varten on tehty posketon määrä taustatyötä ja eri tyylejä on limitetty toistensa kanssa, jotta lopputulos ei olisi suoraan mistään tietystä kulttuurista, mutta näyttäisi silti luonnollisesti syntyneeltä.

Tapahtumapaikkojen ohella esitellään myös hahmoja ja joitakin keskeisiä sukuja. Tulevan valossa kirjaa lukiessa ei voi kuin hämmästellä sitä, kuinka moni hahmo olikaan vielä ensimmäisen kauden aikana hengissä. Hahmotietojen lisäksi myös näyttelijät päästetään ääneen, sekä heidät valinneet tuottajat. Aina välistä kaikkien harrastama toistensa selkääntapauttelu käy silmille, mutta on myös ymmärrettävää. Ensinnäkin, tuskinpa tällaisessa kirjassa keskityttäisiin ongelmakohtiin, ja toisekseen tällaisen sarjan tekeminen on helposti aivan huippukokemus, ja sellaista nyt kuuluukin kuvailla ylisanoilla.

Tietomäärältään kirja ei tuo pöytään hirvittävästi uutta niille, joille jaksot ja kirjat ovat jo tuttuja, vaikka tuottajien näkemyksiä olikin mukava lukea. Kuvapuoli on se, millä Valtaistuinpelin kulisseissa ansaitsee kannuksensa. Osa kuvista esittää kulisseja ja kuvauksia, osa on suoraan sarjan filmivedoksista. Ja niitä riittää. Kokoaukeamat ovat erityisen jylhiä eikä painotekniikka petä missään kohtaa.

Tämä oli taas niitä kirjoja, joissa kiinnitin huomiota suomennoksen laatuun. Monimutkaisemmatkin lauserakenteet toimivat loistavasti ja termistö osui yksi yhteen romaanien kanssa. Tämä ei kyllä ollut yllätys, sillä suomennoksesta vastaa romaanitkin kääntänyt Satu Hlinovsky.

Valtaistuinpelin kulisseissa kiinnostanee eniten sarjan faneja, mutta sopii myös hyväksi esitteleväksi lähdeteokseksi sarjaa tuntemattomille. Kirjasta tosin puuttuvat sarjalle tunnusmerkilliset, uskalletummat kuvat. Olkoon se sitten hyvä tai huono asia.

This was interesting, but I'd really prefer a whole book just about the costumes!
