This is the type of books that is right up my alley! I have always loved the strange and unusual stories that come out of the different wars and major events in history and this book definitely delivers! You always hear about the heroism and other like events in war, but rarely the odd and unusual things that occur. If this intrigues you, then this book is for you!!

I work in a middle school library, so this book is something our students would love. I love the short stories. I like the short segments, it is great when you want something that is a quick, fun and informative read. I'd recommend it!

I didn't post a review on Amazon because of my grandmother's adage, 'if you can't say anything (sufficiently) nice don't say anything at all', but for purposes of thanking LT and Jason Chen for the ARC and opportunity to explore a 'genre' I love, what I'd call 'whimsical non-fiction', I'll post here. The prose in 'Yes, it Happened...' is so awkward as to be nearly unreadable, which leads one to question how thorough the research may be, BUT: I love the idea of anyone being able to write & even publish 100 pages on their discoveries and enthusiasms, so I have browsed through this book several times and have indeed come upon hitherto-unknown info. I expect that someday this title might be revised to make it a bit more entertainingly edifying.

This fun and informative book will have readers trying to remember if they really remember the event or just reading about it! What a fun book for readers of all ages.

The phrase to capture the essence of this book is: The truth is stranger than fiction. I did not know what to expect from this book. This is my first time reading anything by Author Kimberly Miller. It won't be my last. I think anyone of any age can read this book and learn something new. I enjoyed the book very much. The stories in the book ranged from funny, to head shaking disbelief. (when life gives you Tootsie rolls during war time, what do you do? You eat them of course and plug up bullet holes in the fuel drums. Too many beavers in a populated part of Idaho, problem solved, relocate them by parachuting the beavers into the wilderness of Idaho. Hydrogen bombs landing here at home, feet being x-rayed to determine your shoe size. the book is filled with such a wealth of facts. It's a great read for a history buff, someone who wants to up their trivia game or anyone with an inquisitive mind.

I received this book as an early reviewer copy. It contains 41 (very) short examples of historical events around different wars, Secret Service & FBI, UFO sightings, rigged gameshows and so on. Almost all the examples are based in USA or around its history. It could be great to make a "worldwide" edition with insane stories from around the world.
The stories are very short but in this time and age, you can try to Google more details.

I believe the book would come to its finest, if you're reading it with/to an elderly person, closer to the incidents and the time frame from which most of the stories take place (1950's, 1960's and forward). The book might trigger some interesting memories of, how it was growing up and living back then.

Thank you for the opportunity to read the book.

The idea for this short book was interesting: to present a number of curiosities from 1930 to 1960 which are now forgotten, dedicating just two or three pages to each of those. Ok, they are US- or English based, but I never heard about any of them, for example. Unfortunately, the result was not up to the expectations. First of all, most of the stories are quite minor even taking into account that I am not American or British. There are very few exceptions: the state of Moosylvania (with the bonus that I knew very well the cartoons of Rocky and Bullwinkle...), the parachuted beavers, and the project of a bomb kept warm by means of chickens. I could have stand it, but more often than not Miller ends the stories with a patronizing sermon, and this was too much for me. A funny final note: in two stories there is a caveat saying "The use of metric in this story is left this way to stay true to the terminology used by the military." (Indeed many stories are about military happenings). But in one of these the only metric measure was -40 Celsius degrees, that by chance correspond to -40 Fahrenheit degrees... :-)

This is a collection of vignettes about weird and unusual, but true, short stories form history. From Tootsie Rools saving the military to alien abductions, this books has it all. Each story is 2-3 pages, and the book has 97 pages, so it’s a quick read.

Tootsie Rolls saved an army. Bombs lost off the coast of Georgia. Ravers fall from the sky. Barney and Betty Hill. Wildly insane? Oh yeah! It’s all here. This is a great read.

When I was young 50 years ago, I devoured (several times) the Ripley's Believe It or Not books at my great-grandmother's house. Five/six years later, it was the Wallace's books of Lists (our house.) My kids had the Uncle John's Bathroom readers. This is like those. Entertaining; a few new to me, I did check a couple of the wildly insane stories and found them to be true. My one small complaint is that like the other books I mentioned, there are no cites/links for the source material. If the market aim is "seniors", I am of an age and disposition that if I read something without a source, I tend to consider it as little more than opinion, less possibly fact. I am never a "let me google that for you" target, but if I am interested in something now, I will stop reading to dig further. I can also skip passing interest for a more accessible one pretty easily. But that's me. (Oh, and in text citations ... not those surprises at the end of the book.)

I received review copy of this through the LibraryThing Early reviewers program.

Sometimes I want a book that has a little more meat than a webpage “listicle” but one that’s a little denser than a traditional history book. History Compacted always comes through there. This charming book is chock full of quirky stories, from Shirley Temple to alien abductions. But now I’m worried—how many hydrogen bombs have been lost out there? Oh my…

Definitely pick up a copy if you’re looking for light, fun, history. This was a quick, delightful read.

Special thanks to History Compacted and LibraryThing for the chance to read this book in exchange for a review.

Stories are short (2-3 pages each) making it easy to read in bits and pieces as time permits. Not many pictures or illustrations, so very much a reader's book. Anecdotes are based in modern history, so the book will appeal most to people who have interest in those topics. Book had some entertaining anecdotes, but not something I would read again and again.

This is another book of facts and small histories that sound amazing but they really happened, but while I say it is another book, this is possibly one of the most detailed book of facts that I have read, and for that I take off my hat, we get to know the why, where, who and all the backstory, in a really complete way.

The research is well done, is like a school paper done with the help of encyclopedias instead of only googling it, and this is a very well deserved praise, is the kind of book perfect to give as a present, if you buy it for yourself is the kind of book perfect to take a story and use it to flaunt some knowledge.

Thank you LibraryThing for the free ARC and this is my honest opinion.

This is alright for what it is designed for... bite size chunks of odd history for reading on the bog. But not so good on a pdf reading on a laptop. The style is too pop for me, its like reading children's telly and gives me a bit of a headache. Obv. this is a me issue rather than the author or book so make of that what you will...

Just the book you need when in need. Although I would have preferred paper to electronic. A fun collection of strange and even bizarre stories and tales. So many stories that I can't remember any of them. Yet you will definitely find some amusing, and time occupying reads, to while away the minutes. Just remember to flush!

This is a review of a free copy. The title doesn't have anything to do with the content, nor weird nor untold stories. Just general knowledge for people who want to have a basic and short summary of both world wars. I was waiting for some unknown trivia.

Not the enthralling read that I'd hoped it would be, "The Weirdest Read While You Poo on the Loo" is pretty bland and left me with a lot of historical references and stories that I really didn't care about. In addition, this book has a couple of really annoying qualities that were hard for this reader to get beyond. One, it's in desperate need of an editor's touch. There are so many grammatical, capitalization, and punctuation mistakes that reading it was like nails on a chalkboard for me. Secondly, it appears to have been written at about a fifth-grade level with numerous repetitive sentences and references. On the plus side, the book is a quick read with a number of diverse topics. I received this book as part of the Early Reviewers program at LibraryThing.½

I was looking forward to this book and was somewhat disappointed. I was hoping for a bit more detail, instead I got a few facts stated in a "Gosh, Wow!" style. Some of the items were interesting, but the Uncle John's Bathroom Readers do a much better job.½
