2842 The Supreme Court and the Second Bill of Rights: The Fourteenth Amendment and the Nationalization of Civil Liberties, by Richard C. Cortner (read 24 Feb 1996) This is an excellent, excellent book which I found fascinating and most enjoyable. It is on the process by which most of the Bill of Rights has been made applicable to the States. The author makes the pertinent cases live because he gives vivid stories of the cases. He also quotes from the oral arguments--which apparently are available on videotape--and some of the arguments are really funny. The whole question of whether the 14th Amendment made the Bill of Rights applicable to the states was a subject which greatly interested me in law school, but I have not systematically paid attention to it since. This is a book which was really worth reading.… (mehr)
