I hesitate to place this book alongside Yeats-Brown's Lives of a Bengal Lancer and John Master's Bugles and a Tiger, but it ranks only just below.
The author, an Indian Army officer, served with the South Waziristan Militia and Scouts between 1917 and 1940. His accounts of battles and skirmishes with the tribes along the Afghan frontier show that little has changed since then. It was, and remains, a dangerous part of the world to soldier in. His affection and admiration for the native troops under his command shines out through the pages, and seems to have been reciprocated in full measure. It is a straight forward, honest account of soldiering on the NW Frontier of India, an enjoyable read but leaving one wanting more . Which is perhaps not a bad thing.… (mehr)
