Dotty Davis is what I supposed is called a "functional alcoholic" in that she drinks excessively, but still by and large thinks like a detective and can still accomplish things like staying alive when others around her are dropping like flies. There's nothing particularly funny about the story, however, and Dotty is not a very endearing character. And it's hard to like any story if the characters are not likable.

I received this as a free ebook from librarything. The story was amusing, but not necessarily comedic, and not particulary suspenseful. I would liken it to Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum stories. The only problem I had with it, and this might be because it was an ebook, was the editing. Quit a few times, I had to re-read a section to understand who was speaking, and trying to decipher a sentence. It was enough to spoil the flow of the story for me. I was given a mobi ebook version for Kindle from the publisher. I don't know how books are converted to ebook format, but maybe the conversion became mangled. I probably won't read anymore by this author, only because I have so many other ebooks yet to read I think would be more interesting.… (mehr)

Dotty Davis is not the average detective. She's boozing, constantly cursing, is demoted to a file processing function before getting laid off. Dotty finds herself attempting to stay out of reach of police officers, church officials, and neighbors each suspecting her to be heavily involved in a series of brutal killings. Step by step the reader is drawn into this catfight, where truth and lies often collide, and at any time you would expect the detective being unmasked as the killer instead of helping to catch the real one.

Quite a funny plot, so very much at odds with regular whodunnit fiction. How she ends up in the news as the local PI that uncovers the murderous plot, is up to you to discover.
