What is the point of all this? We're introduced to a hypothetical Cleveland, where everything goes swimmingly for everyone involved, and then we're thrown into some weird alt-art scene where... bands play and trends are made? And then we're watching people in a... beach commune? who are always naked and playing games?

While the art is certainly engaging, the whole thing is kind of a mess. There's some slang (not hard to understand), but it doesn't follow throughout, and there's no consistent plot to any of the vignettes, not only from vignette to vignette, but even within the vignettes themselves.

I love Kevin Czap's vision of "future perfect" Cleveland: gorgeously diverse, connected, kind, safe, accepting, and fun. But so much about this book confused me, from the futuristic teen slang to following the narrative across the page to figuring out which people in a crowded drawing I'm supposed to be paying attention to. The plots and chapter transitions are subtle, too. I had to read the book twice to figure out what was going on. That said, the effort was well worth it, and I really hope Czap hones their narrative chops and publishes more stories.… (mehr)
