Needless to say, this one is not a revolutionary to me as the original one. It's a bit more shallow since all the principles that were more thoroughly covered in the original are just simply mentioned without too much detail. To be fair, the author does recommend reading the original Small Teaching before getting into this one. So, this is more a sequel than a stand-alone book.
Otherwise, I got a few useful tips that are easy to implement and use. But I suspect this book will be most useful to more novice online course designers and teachers.
Disclaimer: I still find no value to discussion board that all these designers love so much. So, I did kinda skip the sections pertaining to that.

Key takeaways for me: Instructor engagement with students is as important as in a face-to-face classroom - but it has to be better planned because the spontaneous encounters will not be likely.
Empowering students to increase their motivation is essential for student success: choice is one way to do this, whether that is giving options for assignment topics, options on how many discussion posts need to be written, options on how to work through the required material, or a segment of the course that is designed by students.
Transparency in assignment design - students need to understand why they are asked to work through certain tasks. Students need to get practice in successful online learning - this may be new for us, but it is definitely a new environment for most of our students.
Encouragement - something that can happen quickly in a face-to-face classroom takes more time and effort in an online class - be an online cheerleader.

Darcy Flowers and James Lang have written a book that reflects the advice I currently give to faculty plus some. The guidance that Flowers and Lang provided elevate online courses from correspondence courses to those with substantive human interaction. Read more
