I am a little confused but at the same time intrigued. I want to know more.

Some questions have been answered, while new ones emerged.

Filled with clean lines, bright colours and gory gore, Clean Room starts off running and does not quit.

I loved the way the art, writing, and colouring all came together.

When Image launched oh so many years ago, I passed on all the WildStorm books. I didn't try them in earnest until Jim Lee brought Alan Moore and Warren Ellis on board to kick up the quality of the writing and then sold the whole kit and caboodle to DC. Even then my interest plummeted any time the word "daemon" appeared.

Hoping for a new Authority, I thought I'd give this reboot a try, but it seems to be going all in on daemons and throws in the equally dull concept of super secret intelligence agencies fighting amongst themselves not so secretly. Individual pages are mostly fine, thanks in part to the fine art, but at the end of the book I didn't particularly care about any of the people or their problems. But it wasn't bad, I suppose, and my library seems to have the entire series available, so I'll probably come back to this in a few weeks.

I pretty much missed the entire Image launch back in the day, as I'd stepped away from comics. So, WildC.A.T.s and all the others? Nope, no idea what they were about.

In the almost thirty years since, I've come back around to comics, and mostly fallen in love with a few writers, such as Garth Ennis, Warren Ellis, Terry Moore, Donny Cates, and most recently, Tom King. I'll pretty much give anything these writers toss out, and rarely have I been disappointed (okay, aside from the recent discovery of Ellis' personal...um...grooming...habits...what a dick).

Regardless, I picked this up solely due to Warren Ellis writing it. And when Ellis is on with his science and tech, dude is on.

Unfortunately, he's waaaay waaay off this time. I know he's trying to jumpstart an entire comic universe, while also laying down elements of both current and future stories, but in the meantime, he sacrifices comprehensive storytelling for tech gobbledygook.

The main story of Angie Spica's sudden appearance as the Wildstorm Universe's Iron Man, but instead of running the show, she's pretty much running away from the show, is a good one. Unfortunately, Ellis throws characters that literally have nothing to do with the story at the reader just because they'll be needed down the line somewhere. And the rest don't get enough screen time for us to really get to know them as well as we should.

This is universe-building as speed dating. Doesn't work.

One star for Warren, four stars for the beautiful art.

I don't really have the full background knowledge of Wildstorm to parse all of this, but it has a certain weirdness to it that I really enjoy. I'm probably hoping for too much for Ellis to tone down the violence and make the characters a bit richer, but this was a pretty fun read. A big summer blockbuster of a comic.

it's okay. but it might be a grower. pretty fucking wierd and confusing and slow to start.
I will read the second one as I think it might possibly get somewhere interesting.

Also, another one of those comics that seems to be trying to interest you by just having a load of pointless nudity.

A reporter has been trying to investigate a cult of a self-help guru that some of her followers kill themselves for no apparent reason. Chloe lost her fiancé to Astrid and her group and she will not stop until she finds the reasons for it. By the end of this collection you have some idea of what the cult is about but no real conclusions. It was a bit too creepy for me so I don’t think I’ll be picking up the next one.

Not for me. I don't have any issue with the story - demons or otherworldly beings wrecking havoc on Earth is always a good story. Unfortunately, the plot had too many holes in it, and a lot of sex and violence seemed to be thrown in solely for shock value and not for its relevance to the story.

Wow, that was unexpected. This seems more like a Warren Ellis or Grant Morrison story than the Gail Simone I'm used to. There is a lot going on here, and I'm not sure I totally follow it yet. At first that was frustrating, but by the end I was just happy to be along for the ride. I'm looking forward to future installments.

A good continuation of the wild ride begun in the first volume, though the corporate takeover storyline seemed to be unnecessary padding.

Ha! A horror comic with "not-scientologists" (totally scientologists you guys). I've read way too much about those folks, but it is refreshing to see it done in a fictional way... and as if those kooky kooks were right! ha! So those bad guys are Body Thetans, the souls of murdered aliens that attach themselves to human hosts and make us sick (yes, like in that South Park episode). So there are lots of little bits for uh... the scientology geeks? out there. Like the OT3 wall of fire thing (which ha! actually did make a guy kill himself in this comic, as opposed to just making a person go... "well that's stupid, i spent how much money for this hack sci-fi story? $300,000?" Like I said... whythefuck I know this much about scientology idk. Now, so far the story is a leeetle bit lacking. Right now it's like, oooo it's real! but it doesn't mean anything yet. Like, do the ends justify the means of this destructive cult if it means getting rid of EVIL ALIENS? Oh! and how awesome would be if a little more reality was worked in somehow, like of course people are going to be giving a billions years of existence and aborting their babies to be fighting EVIL ALIENS. Evil aliens are a roaring great yarn! But... so far it's just like... weird people are cReEpy, and... like, 8th grade level gore? and gratuitous nudity. So the horror geek in me goes ehhhh... but the cult geek is going ooooooh! i'm sticking with it and seeing where it goes for now.

Even though I'm not 100% sure what exactly is going on, I'm intrigued by this dark and beautifully illustrated comic. When Chloe's fiance suddenly kills himself and leaves behind a self-help book by his side, she is determined to find if the two are linked. Little does Chloe know that the head of the self-help Empire, Astrid, has more power, prestige, and hidden secrets then she ever could have imagined. Determined to get to the mysterious clean room housed at Astrid's headquarters, Chloe doesn't take no for an answer and unleashes unimaginable horror. Fun, I want to see where this series goes.

A well-written, strongly-illustrated, highly-compelling graphic novel. Clean Room takes a Scientology-esque institution and places it into productive action, revealing an alternative awareness of the world which both enlightens and terrifies those who know. Astrid Mueller is a horror writer turned self-help guru who has attracted a large umber of devoted followers, including nearly all of Hollywood, who attend weekly "readings" and espouse her wisdom. The organization is also cited in a number of suicides, calling into question Mueller's intentions and control, and whether or not her "help" is really positive. When a reporter's fiance falls under Mueller's spell, and kills himself suddenly, she makes it her mission to expose Mueller and take down the organization. Of course, there is far more to the story than she imagines, which she discovers after being allowed a rare glimpse into the "clean room" that is Astrid's true command center. The book is a creative take on alternative social communities and suggestive of a real horror that will leave readers on edge. The character development is strong and largely believable, making the fantastic all the more possible. Very well done.
