There may be a few people scratching their head on why i gave this old and dated book a 5 star rating, but I did it for the way it makes me feel. I am a military brat. We would spend years not seeing family. This book reminds me of when you would show up at grams’ (grandmother to you) and she DIDN’T have all you favorite foods waiting. It was heartbreaking, until you discover that you can make it yourself. That is basically the story of this book, but with a bear and a rabbit. And let me tell you I was 28 before I realized why no one else's rice krispies treats tasted like grams. It's not always the ingredients, but sometimes the way it's made that makes all the difference.

This book follows the story of a goose who wants to submit her book to be published! She gets second opinions from other animals on the book that she has written and she has to make many edits to her book. Many other animals do not even think that she can be a writer because she is a goose. Finally, the publishing company agrees to publish her book, just as long as she changes on of her characters.

There are a lot of clever details in this book-- in the illustrations in and in the actual writing. I am not a big fan on how it was written. I think it might be difficult for younger children to read. It is written kind of awkwardly. There is no flow to the words. However, I like the concept of the book and I really enjoyed the illustrations. There are a lot of funny goose puns and jokes in this book which I really enjoyed too!

This book is set in the winter time where a son seems to always be on his mother's last nerve. He even says that his mother hates him because it is the month of January. He always seems to be bothering her one way or another. She yells at him for having clay in the living room, playing "monsters" in the living room", making messy popcorn balls, and putting on his snow gear the wrong way. Once the mother realizes that spring is almost here, her mood changes. She wants to play games with him and make fun snacks with him too.

The weather definitely does affect our everyday mood and this book demonstrates this idea. The mother is always angry during January because of the weather but the boy knows that she will be happy when the spring time comes. I thought it was funny that the son could recognize that his mother was just about ready to have a mental breakdown. I think the book is kind of depressing because all the mother seems to do is yell at him. I was not sure if children want to read about getting yelled at by their mothers. I do not think I would have wanted to read about something like this. Will children understand the frustrations of being a parent? Or will the child only see the mother as being a cruel dictator during the cold month of January? The idea of the book is interesting but I do not know if I would have understood the book as a child like the author may have intended for me to understand it.

In this book, Bear was upset that Groundhog moved out, so he started treating Chipmunk poorly because she moved in. Bear wasn't so happy about having Chipmunk around. He didn't want her to take Groundhog’s spot in the friend group. For example, in the book, Bear stated, “Why does Chipmunk alway have to come with us?” The other animals said “Some things are better with two.” The other animals wanted Bear to like Chipmunk and give her a chance, but Bear still stuck to his ways. This was until Chipmunk weeded Bear’s garden for him out of the kindness of her heart. Bear thanked each and everyone of his friends for weeding his garden, but they all said it wasn't them. When he came home, he noticed that Chipmunk was in his garden. Once he realized it was her, Bear was happy, and finally accepted Chipmunk and thanked her. I loved the moral of this story and how it teaches kids that it is okay to make new friends. This book was a good read, and I plan on having it on my bookshelf in my future classroom.

I thought this book was very interesting for a few reasons. The plot of the book is impressive to me because there are not many children's books that address single parenthood, and far less that address job loss. The plot did this in a very comforting, realistic, and uncomplicated way. The main character is a little girl who experiences a great range of emotions and concerns when she learns her mother was fired, and I think that these represent valid reactions that children can engage with. The central message that the book addresses towards the end of the story is that children shouldn't feel that these situations are their fault or that they are responsible for taking on jobs of their own to help make things better.

Duck is a very clean and orderly person, whereas Bear is the exact opposite. With such different view, will their friendship ever be able to work?

This book has a wonderful theme behind it that can help the reader to realize that even though they may be different and have different view on life, it does not mean that they cannot be friends. It also has new words to help the students to expand their vocabulary.

Reading Level: Primary (K-3)
Genre: Fantasy

Three Friends Find Spring, is a great book about the seasons and friendship. I really liked this book for a number of reasons. First, the characters were well developed and portrayed the importance of friendship. Duck is a character that is feeling gloomy about the weather, as he hates winter. His friends Squirrel and Rabbit come to his rescue and try to cheer him up by showing him fun winter activities. For example, “On Saturday morning Rabbit and Squirrel knocked on Duck’s door. “Duck, we have come to help you enjoy winter,” said Rabbit. “We want you to go skating with us,” said Squirrel. These characters showed Duck that winter could be fun and the importance of good friends. Next, this book had great illustrations that enhanced the story. The Illustrations really depicted the seasons and the weather outside. While reading the story the scenery of the seasons came alive. Lastly, I really liked the plot because it was well organized and well developed. The story presented the importance of friendship and contains constant mishaps between the three friends. This keeps the audience laughing and reminds you that friendships are important but not always perfect. How the three friends find spring brings upon many chuckles. Overall, the main idea of this story is how friends can still have fun together despite if they like or dislike the season they’re in during the year.
