Elizabeth Griscom born in Philadelphia on January 1, 1752. She was one of 17 children. Besty and her family were Quakers. Besty would sew the little white caps the Quaker girls wore. She meets a man named John they fall in love and gets married despite her family's disapproval. John joined the military, and while guarding one of the ammunition house, it exploded. Besty was approached by George Washington to design the American flag. He believed the flag would show the colonies untied.
