David Altmejd: The Index (English, Italian and… von Louise Déry
David Altmejd's powerful installations present a unique approach to sculpture, with nothing created, nothing rejected, and everything used. His new project, created for the 2007 Venice Biennial, is an aviary composed of bridges, trees, steel and glass mirrors and inhabited by stuffed birds that are half-men, half animal. The whole is richly ornamented with quartz crystals and glass shards and set within a glass display case. The work abounds with references to life, to death and to perpetuity.
Stephane La Rue has been a major figure on the Canadian painting scene for more than a decade. This first monograph covers the last several years of work and is backed up by extensive commentary from a wide range of sources, including critics, acadamics and gallery owners. Over the years, La Rue has forged a rich and diverse body of work with the most minimal of means. Working almost exclusively in monochrome white, he takes painting back to a ground zero where its double status as object and image oscillates within a constructed field of vision. Some works are quiet and meditative; others are boldly physical and hold the wall like Constructivist sculptures.
