While dated in photos, this is an excellent book for introducing kids to the sport of orienteering. (This is the instructor manual.) There are plenty of exercises and illustrations to help someone understand how to do the sport as well as some strategy as to the best way to go about it.

This was my sport in high school. I was in terrible shape and was always one of the very last ones in but I always finished the course. One memorable event was such a hard course that when I finished, the organizers were almost done packing the truck. (A 30 minute course had taken me 3 hours.) But my bullheadedness for once helped: I came in third because everyone smart had dropped out.

But I still love the sport: an individual sport requiring thinking and moving at the same time, often a chore for me. But it makes the moving part easier at least.… (mehr)
