E.R. Dodds (1893-1979) was born in Belfast and educated at Campbell College, Belfast, and Balliol College, Oxford. He was Regius Professor of Greek at Oxford from 1936 to 1960 and President of the Society for Psychical Research from 1961 to 1963.

The Greeks and the Irrational von E. R. Dodds
Based on the author's 1949 lectures at Berkeley. It is the intellectual passion to seek understanding of the Other that leads to the questioning of "Greek culture is the victory of reason". The old and new beliefs that do not contradict each other signify that the age of perfect reason is still to come, and the Inherited Conglomerate (layered accumulation) of ancient Greek religion has been preserved. The author's mention of Freud's subconscious theory is very interesting. The whole book is clear and classical.… (mehr)
From 16 August to 22 December, this has been a four month journey. And a bit of a slog (610 pages). The first 1/3 was by far the most interesting:

From here – almost half the book – until the final 1/6, there was little of interest and very little memorable. Coincidentally, this coincides with MacNeice joining the BBC.

The early poems benefit from his early life experiences, WWII, and the breakdown of his marriage as source material. He's also experimenting with forms. Thereafter, he doesn't seem to develop much, and he becomes stuck in this Oxford classics world – a problem that recurs today with a certain element of society.
I was surprised at MacNeice's seeming inability to extend his interests, even to explore – a kind of absence of curiosity. The poems are mainly descriptions of what surrounds him and, frankly, not very poetic.
This is clearly a solid collection of MacNeice's poems, so five stars for that. In terms of quality and content, I found little of interest or particularly memorable; so two stars. Overall, three stars.… (mehr)

LOS GRIEGOS Y LO IRRACIONAL
Este es un clásico. Aunque en algunos momentos suena anticuado, escrito como en una época dominada por Freud, la tesis central se mantiene bien y es un importante correctivo de la visión predominante de los griegos como racional. Doods cuestiona la opinión de que la religión es racional, lo cual creo que es una contribución aún más importante y duradera. La Edad de la Razón más antigua es más compleja según Dodds y examina de manera bastante efectiva la tradición irracional contraria que atraviesa los mitos y la filosofía griegos.
La visión más típica de los griegos exagera la Ilustración jónica, mientras que Dodds quiere que veamos una visión más compleja que incluye sonidos pitagóricos, indicios de religión y misticismo indios, reencarnación asociada con los misterios cúlticos y el politeísmo desnaturalizado por el monoteísmo posterior.
