It starts out with and avalanche in which the brother buried in the snow is confronted by a decaying body of a person. Next, a distressed mother needs assistance with finding her missing college student son. The law enforcement problems continue to multiply and the interpersonal issues just about keep pace with the work related issues. But the K-9s reign supreme over all. Loved it!
I requested and received a free temporary EARC from Harlequin - Romance, Carina Press via NetGalley. Thank you!

The Hansley brothers are experienced snowboarders and carry equipment to protect themselves during an avalanche. The lure of fresh powder is irresistible in Pino Grande National Forest, Antler Valley, Colorado, but now Trey can’t believe he didn’t listen to Chase as his brother went first down the mountain, followed by an avalanche. However, when Trey finds Chase, it isn’t snow that is keeping Chase pinned down under the snow but a dead body. The local law enforcement team didn’t realize it was only the 1st body before Maya Thompson, a Forest Service officer, and her K-9 Juniper were called to help with the investigation.

A page-turning romantic suspense and mystery filled with twists, turns, and a pace that keeps adrenaline in high gear. Simultaneous to the investigation, there is personal drama and secrets that escalate the pressure of Maya’s PTSD, Josh’s sobriety, and Pop’s trial preparations.

One of the elements that I most appreciate about the author’s writing is the way K-9 training, law enforcement terminology, and, for this novel, terminology related to avalanches and winter storms are explained as an integral part of the storyline but do not feel like a forced training manual or vocabulary lesson. Reading on my Kindle, I can quickly look up terms in areas outside my knowledge base, but it’s always an interruption. The author’s writing allows me to learn while keeping me engaged in the storyline without delay or spoiling the suspenseful pace.

Reviewer's Note: The novel can be enjoyed as a stand-alone. Still, I highly recommend reading the series to fully appreciate the growth and development of relationship dynamics of the characters (e.g., grandfather/granddaughter, dog handler/canine, forest service officer/sheriff deputy). Each book ramps up the intensity of the relationships and the cases to be solved.
In my review of Book 1, I added this information –
"The novel includes material some readers might find difficult, including violence against women, drug and alcohol use, and discussion of suicide. I felt all subject matter was vital to the story and handled with care not to exploit or minimize. I was engrossed in Kathleen Donnelly's debut novel!"
If it is best for you to skip Book 1 due to the Trigger Warnings, I would like to recommend beginning this gripping series with Book 2, as I wouldn't want any reader to miss the series entirely.

Don’t miss adding this stand-alone or series (as per your preference) to your tbr list, especially for readers who enjoy Sandra Brown novels.

Maya Thompson is a U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement Officer with her K-9 partner, a Malinois named Juniper in Colorado. Beyond work, Maya is committed to investigating the cold case murders of her mother, Zoey, and grandmother. The multitude of questions surrounding the circumstances of the deaths, 10 years apart, have haunted Maya and Pops, her grandfather and local Sheriff. The investigation is sparking Maya's PTSD from her military service as a U.S. Marine in Afghanistan and triggering fragmented memories of the past. The most vivid memory of the past is when she was almost 5 years old, with the last instructions her mother gave her and the last words she ever heard her mother say,
"Hide, Maya. Don't let the bad people find you."
I loved the character portrayal of Maya, Pops, and his deputy sheriff Josh Colten. All 3 individuals devoting their lives to justice through their law enforcement service are not perfect but are even more captivating, pushing through their flaws and the different experiences of anguish in their personal lives. The character portrayal of Maya is a testament to a woman's inner strength and resilience, pushing through vulnerabilities after deception by a man in their relationship, grief in the loss of her mother and Nana, and PTSD from military service.

Juniper. What extraordinary work is accomplished by a K-9 in their partnership with a serving officer in law enforcement. The author’s writing highlights learning about the training and service of these exceptional dogs. The meticulous training and outstanding service are seamlessly incorporated into her storytelling, resulting in compelling reading. Unsurprisingly, the authenticity I felt in the partnership is true to the author’s service.

The excitement of adventure, mystery, and slow-build romance possibility of Book 1 gave intrigue as to how Book 2 would progress. For this reader, it was a page-turning read that kept me on the edge of my seat. I highly recommend this series. I can't wait to read the further developments.

Thank you to Kathleen Donnelly, Carina Press, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an eARC of this book.

Maya Thompson, a U.S. Marine has returned home from Afghanistan to Colorado with PTSD after losing her K-9. Best friend Doug Leyton is now Maya’s field training officer (FTO) to become a U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement Officer. On the 2nd last day of training Maya makes a promise to Doug under emergency conditions that she doesn’t know if she can keep.

There is a note at the beginning of the novel advising:
“Chasing Justice includes material some readers might find difficult, including violence against women, drug and alcohol use, and discussion of suicide.”
I felt all subject matter was vital to the story and handled with care not to exploit or minimize.

After finishing the novel it was not surprising to learn that Kathleen Donnelly is a co-owner and K-9 handler for Sherlock Hounds Detection Canines, a private narcotics detection company. Authenticity and realism add heightened interest to the relationship between Doug and his K-9 Juniper and as Juniper responds to changes in his handling have genuine sparks of detail and emotions.

I was engrossed in Kathleen Donnelly’s debut novel! I am thankful that Kathleen Donnelly began following my book reviews on Instagram or I might not have discovered her writing.

Exploring the author’s social media, it was very exciting to read an announcement made on FB this summer.
“I have exciting news…I signed a two book deal with Carina Press! I'm so excited…‘Hunting the Truth’ is scheduled to come out in the summer of 2023 and ‘Killer Secrets’ will be out in 2024.”
I’ll be watching for the pre-order buttons!
