One of the interesting things about this book is the way its date of original publication, 1956, reflects the huge change in what was allowed to be published in terms of erotic content and style. I imagine it was felt to be daring at the time, with its fairly explicit descriptions of adolescent exploration and the detailed erotic entanglements of the principal character, Susan Holiday with the men she encountered later. Within six or seven years the pace of change in permitted erotica had made this book seem a little bloodless, and such changes have continued unabated since then. The erotic scenes are understated by today's standards, and the book come over as a description of criminal goings-on in which drug crime and salaciousness are allowed only minor parts. That said, the story told is graphic in its depiction of the sordid aspects of the 1950s, and its portrayal of Susan Holiday's amorous and emotional conflicts make it an interesting book. This is the story of Susan, a comely, country lass, who heads off to the big city for a better life and some excitement. Once there, she hooks up with the wrong guy, who she thinks is the right guy, and is soon turning tricks for him and experimenting with drugs.

This is a classic 1950's dope/porn book with a great "evils of the big city" theme. I love the occasional beat terminology and the 50's drug slang in it and the sex scenes aren't too bad either, with lots of flowery language used. The author's real name is Denny(also seen as Deny) Bryant, who a casual internet search about turned up nothing. First published in 1956 as number 6 in the Traveller's Companion Series. This edition published in 2005 as number 66 in the New Traveller's Companion series, by Olympia Press.com. 140 pages. Highly recommended.… (mehr)
