“This book is simply an effort to show what a man endures when his country decides to go to war, with or without his personal agreement on the righteousness of the cause . . . In their own eyes, they were participating in everyday events while serving in a foreign land where their country was at war . . . a war without heroes.” David Douglas Duncan

This is a love story, and it is graphic, and there is also some sex.

This is also a beautiful book and it is to be read while sipping something such as a “tisane” (and evoke memories), or a coffee, or a glass of wine, or may be even some Scotch.

Lump, the protagonist, accompanied by his caretaker and documentarian David Douglas Duncan, visits Picasso and Jacqueline in their beautiful house, La Californie, in Cannes.

The documentarian takes photos and photos, all in black and white, with his Leica, and witnesses the growth of love between Lump and Picasso, and also between Lump and Jacqueline.

Lump is also a witness to the love between Picasso and Jacqueline.

This is in 1956-57.

Documentation is also left of Lump’s marriage to Lolita (what a literary suggestive name). Picasso acted as the camorrero as we say in Spanish. Lolita arrives beautifully attired with some lace round her neck ready for her nuptials. As she was also, like Lump, a Dachshund, they were expected to produce pure breeds. But there was no issue.

The poignant moment in the drama is when Picasso, the host, offered the cardboard Rabbit to Lump:

And yes, Lump ate it ! , but the spoiler is in the Title as well.

In proof of his love for Lump, Picasso offered him this:

And since Picasso was very aware of posterity, he immortalized Lump in his version of the other immortal painting, Veláquez’s Las Meninas.

In honor to them both, the book closes with this Amigos Forever, which they have both remained since 1973:

P.S.: For the sex scene between Lolita and Lump, you would have to buy the book.

Some people remember where they were when Kennedy was shot. I don't; I was only two. I do remember hearing about Picasso's death. I was ten and in my art class when our teacher told us. I wept. I wept for the great spirit, the wildly inventive explorer, the man who painted as an adult when a child, but taught himself as an older man to see and paint as a child. I cried because I would never meet him. I so very much wanted to join in his fun. This book replete with photographs of Picasso with his family and friends is as close as I can ever get to that.

A quirky and heartwarming peek into the past of an artistic genius and the diminutive pooch that inspired his work. As any proud owner of a dachshund can tell you, their will’s are indomitable and their characters can force a smile even from the most melancholy of hearts. This quick read is well worth your time and money if you are interested in an intimate glimpse into Picasso’s past and the little dog that forced his way into an artistic master’s heart.

As I was walking through the library the spine of this book caught my eye. So I picked it up and here I am the next day writing my review.

My only disappointment with this book is that it is missing many pages. Obviously those who have read it before me didn't seem to care that they were ripping out pages that someone else may like to look at. Most of the pages that are missing are from the section of the book entitled Picasso's Picassos. So most of what I missed wasn't the story but rather the paintings that were pictured.

The author of this book doesn't seem to have sat and "wrote" the book. Most of the text is letter that he had written to others about his time spent with Picasso and his family. The sections that are letters are mostly explanations of pictures and little blurbs about Picasso's family. I found it to be quite revealing without giving us everything. Picasso seemed to be a very quiet man and while his homes were of a grand scale the pauper lifestyle that he lived seems to give him a sense of being "normal". The pictures in this book of Picasso are great and I think that the photographer/author did a great job of showing a regular man who loved his family and his work.

The four amateur artists whose work appears in this book do not have much in common. Dorle Lindner is a house-wife in a suburb of London. She says, "I live and work in a frame... I think it's night. Everything and nothing influences me... My world is my own."
Dr. Oscar Forel travels the world with his photographic equipment and his own special vision. In the winter, he says, he stays close to the 300-year-old plane tree in his own garden. Entire galaxies of myseries await discovery in its bark. "It's my cathedral," he says.
Hsueh Shao-Tang - master chef and master artist - creates his own Garden of Eden from bits of postage stamps! Ariane Christine Elisabeth Colette Jeanne Marie de Lalaing van der Elst is a Hungarian countess by birth, a baroness by marriage, and an amateur photographer wishing to be known only as "Ariane" by choice. The common trait of the four is the secret vision of each, of their own fantastic world.
David Duncan, the author/photographer of this book, also shares some of Picasso's work with us. He and Picasso were long=time friends. The book is truly fascinating!
