The End of the Innocence

I'd recently enjoyed the clips of the 1977 Capital Centre concert that have shown up on the Internet, and I discovered that I could get footage of that concert by buying this documentary, so I bought it. It was a decision I regret, because I found it really depressing to watch hour after hour of the escapades of a bunch of promiscuous drug abusers. And there's a lot of arrogance and acrimony on display (culminating, perhaps, when one band member threatens to kill another for being insufficiently enthusiastic about a pro-peace political candidate). Certain band members do come across sympathetically, but the net effect is a real downer, or at least it was for me. And to top it all off, I somehow managed, by paying a little extra money, to get a version that doesn't have the Capital Centre concert! It's just as well, I guess, because I'm probably going to have to forget this documentary before I can enjoy Eagles music again.

A more generous collection that the Greatest Hits, with some decent liner notes

I like the Eagles and I wanted to love this collection. I thoroughly enjoyed the songs they were known for. I didn't enjoy the outtakes, but I think a completist or a true fan would. I find myself skipping those, thus the bump down to four stars.

What a great CD! I like the mix of songs and styles. If you are going to pick a good representative CD for the Eagles, consider this one. Get Over It is rocking; Love Will Keep Us Alive is a gentle ballad; The Girl from Yesterday has a country feel; the rest of the songs have a similar mix.
