Because our local library district didn't have a copy, I purchased this book (used) for a research paper on Marie Spartali Stillman. She was a Pre-Raphaelite artist. Because of the times (during the Victorian era) --and being a woman-- she didn't, or doesn't, get as much recognition as the male Pre-Raphaelite artists did, or does. She took lessons under Ford Madox Brown, and was a prolific artist who exhibited her works, even after and during marriage and motherhood.

Many examples of her artwork are represented, so I do consider this a worthwhile purchase. However, the author (a relative of some sort, I believe), does not discuss her artwork and its' merits as much as he presents a chronological lineage of Spartali's life and that of her husband, William James Stillman's life. More attention is paid to Spartali and her works, as Stillman was more of a "Sunday painter" rather than taking creating art as seriously as Spartali did.

Still, it is a welcome addition to my art history section of my home library.
