1440 The French Novel from Eighteen Hundred to the Present, by Winfried Engler translated from the German by Alexander Goode (read 22 Mar 1977) This book bored me to death, mostly I suppose, because it talks of so many French novelists I had never heard of. It made me think I should read Julian Green, since the author said "we are certainly justified in claiming for Green a place next to Gide, Proust, Malraux, Martin du Gard, Aragon, and Butor among the leading novelists of the first six decades of the 20th century whose rank is firmly assured." In the years since I have read this stuff by Green:

So reading that one sentence from this book caused me to read a lot of stuff, much of it with appreciation. This is an illustration of how one sentence can lead to the expenditure of a lot of time.… (mehr)
