The perfect devotional prayer book for children with shortened headings and instructive notations, along with notes on the church year and the assemblies, will be helpful throughout the church’s calendar year.

The Revised Common Lectionary contains the three-year cycle of readings developed by the Consultation on Common Texts, modified for use in the Episcopal Church.

The RCL was derived from the Catholic Order of Readings and was revised in 1992 and adopted by the ECUSA in 2006. This edition reflects changes to the Holy Week readings made by the ECUSA.

Organized by calendar date, the Logos edition of the Revised Common Lectionary allows you to easily find the readings of the week and read them in your preferred translation.

Using Lectionary Resources in Logos Bible Software

The readings are arranged by calendar date and the book automatically opens at the next set of readings. For each Sunday or feast, the title, the season and the liturgical color is given. The text of the readings for the day is displayed in the translation you specify at the top of the panel, and links are provided that you can use to open your Bible or right-click to quickly open up Logos guides, tools and searches for deeper study and sermon preparation.

For more general study, you can also find a complete listing of readings organized by liturgical event (i.e. more like a print lectionary that you can re-use year to year) in the “Index of Readings” found at the end of the lectionary.

Just as the title suggests, this is an indispensable companion for the Anglican clergyman, choirmaster, organist, musician, or anyone working in Protestant pastoral ministry. A handy reference work that provides an essay on the history of each hymn tune and text, with biographies of authors, composers, translators, and arrangers. Very useful for providing historically accurate information when making reference to the hymns of the day in a sermon or Sunday School teaching.

Out of print and hard to find these days. If you see one for sale, get it while you can.

The compiler, and perhaps author, of this work is largely done by Thomas Cranmer 1489-1556, serving as the Archbishop of Canterbury.

The Episcopal Hymnal 1940. In this book can be found most of the hymns that American Folk Guitarist John Fahey recorded. In addition, this contains many folk hymns from Annabel Morris Buchanan's "Folk Hymns of America." Altogether a very nicely done compilation. But obsolete now, I guess. Still, if you want a good representation of the best American hymnody had to offer circa 1940, you could hardly go wrong by obtaining a copy (mine came from a thrift store in San Francisco, circa 1988). There are also many good English hymns in this collection ('Bishopthorpe,' 'Rendez a Dieu,' Gibbon's 'Song 67,' etc.).

Kindle Edition: Not quite as easy to use as I had hoped. Looking for a specific prayer in the Table of Contents proved to be somewhat difficult and time-consuming. True pagination absent: page search "{p. 384}" is very awkward across Kindle devices (original, Fire) and apps (iPad/iPhone).

Haven't used this in my very liberal church yet: want to ask permission first!½

Lots of the tunes here were adapted from early or folk music. We find it useful from time to time.

A prayerbook with readings from the Bible. If you use the morning and or evening office, and read from the daily lectionary, this is a must have, because you have everything in one volume. (Well actually two, because there is year one and year two.)

If you do daily devotions, you may want to pick this up and try using the morning office.

I am NOT trying to review the Prayer Book. I just want to point out that this IS the 1928 book and not the 1970s revision. The edition I picture contains all the charts for the readings, but it contains only the Psalter and not the actual Biblical text for those daily readings. It's your perfect Mass companion and, of course, your Morning and Evening prayer necessity. This is also a nice, lightweight, BIG PRINT edition, which is one reason I like to keep it at my bedside.
