Jane Etarie

I wasn't sure just how I felt about this book - almost right up until the very end, but I couldn't put it down anyway.

This is written more in a diary-style format than a straightforward story, everything that happens is the main character telling you what is going on in her world from her very distinct point of view. What's fascinating about this book is that you really see through the eyes of the main character - and she is so despicable a person quite often I found it very uncomfortable to read, and I felt myself getting extremely angry with her. It's that well written. I'm not sure the last time I had felt something so strong for a character, and that's where the true value of this book lies - in Etarie's amazing ability to illicit these responses from her readers.

The point of the book is not to sympathize or empathize with the main character - and I think (from looking at some other reviewers) they didn't appreciate that - but the writing is so astounding at how much you do feel the hatred for this character growing as you continue along the book.

What I loved as well is how skewed then main character's point of view is, and not what she said, but rather completely left out. I've been left questioning just what did occur or not occur in the real world - never mind the skewed world view of the character.

This is really a great book - everything is extremely well done, and the visceral hate I feel for the main character is a testament to that.

I'd suggest this book to anybody looking for something completely out of the ordinary, don't go into it expecting one thing, and just hang on for the ride.… (mehr)
