This is basically on of those bad teen high school movies in book form, with a few plot points and names from Pride and Prejudice added. Characters not very likeable, not even Lizzie. Its just a bad, vapid retelling of Pride and Prejudice, with some glaring grammar mistakes.

I loved this book so much. It was a lovely sequel to the first book in this series. I loved the way this story really focused on Holmes and Watson friendship. I loved both the case and the characters that came into the story. It def was a step up in from book one. I loved the adorable illustrations and also who the "villian" was in this story. I also really enjoyed the how the mystery was developed and how it really effected the main characters. It was such a fun read and grew to love John even more!

I'm sorry but this book is bad. Just because it comes from a place where the idea is cute, doesn't mean the author wrote it well. As soon as I read "What to the Evs" I knew I was in for it. The cover is cute and the idea of a Lonely Hearts Club is cute, but the Beatle references were bad. They were so forced. I get that she grew up on the The Beatles, but she acted like that was the only music she could ever stand to listen to. I doubt a teenager is going to be like that, especially if their parents are obsessed. Teenagers rebel from their parents. The relationship with Ryan was so obvious, I personally like a little mystery. Her acting like she didn't realize she liked him, please! And miss super awesome perfect Diane, no one exists like that. There is no friend who is going to date someone forever and when they break up be happy to give him to one of her friends.
The conversations were bad, no one talks like that. When she's telling off Nate, I'm thinking yeah this is how I would've wrote that conversation too if I didn't know how to write conversations. You can't just have the girl talk at him, it sounds so fake.
Take the sex and drinking out of it and give it to 5th graders because that's the level I found it to be on. So bad I literally felt offended!

Good message but the delivery had all the subtlety of a hammer. I didn't particularly care for the narrator, Penny Lane, she seemed kind of self-righteous. And the dialogue was weird and stiff.

There's much better YA Fic out there. Go read some Sarah Dessen or Elizabeth Scott.

Cute, but nothing spectacular. As far as Pride and Prejudice retellings, it was a little too literal.

So I absolutely ADORED this book. It has to be my favorite YA romance novel of 2014 so far. Better Off Friends is a story about Macallan and Levi's friendship. They recount their adventures through middle school and high school through their own point of view sometimes adding in their own commentary, showing that guys and girls can just be friends...kind of.
Better Off Friends is an extremely cliche and predicable novel, but in an adorable good way. Although I'm not a huge fan of alternating POV's, this one definitely worked as I loved seeing their story from both perspectives and hearing their different opinions.
Better Off Friends is definitely a fantastic, fun read, fit for people looking for a light hearted romance between two friends.
But seriously, everyone needs to read it.

I really want to like these books more, but I can't get over the fact that they're set in Harlem and the majority of the characters are Black, except for Shelby, the savior of the stories. Why couldn't Shelby also be Black? And the books don't directly address how much more at risk of harm John is than Shelby in all the scenarios Shelby forces them into, because he's a Black boy and she's a white girl.

Note: I received a digital review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

I didn't like Lonely Hearts Club--it was bland and I gave up within the first fifty pages. This is not uncommon. My reviews on here and ratings are of books I actually finished. I DNF books overwhelmingly. It's not a crack at the author actually; I am super impatient and have high expectations. It is a me thing. Nonetheless, I was hesitant to read this book because I hadn't liked the other. Stumbled across this by chance. I thought it was about theatre, and, no. Opened the cover to read the flap, it's about -teens in a performing arts academy-. -Gonna read-, I thought. Gonna -make- myself read no matter how bad, because that setting--to say it hits a nerve is inaccurate. That sounds like I'm mad, and I'm not. It--is a setting I'm really into, and really--it's a positive, deep-seated thing.

I was entirely absorbed in the setting of the book. I liked how the characters were set up, and their backgrounds, and how that affected them so deeply. The author writes teens incredibly well, and the dialogue flowed. I chuckled at times. I was still entirely unprepared for the sheer levels of nails on a chalkboard-level melodrama, whining, weirdly set up love triangles, and oh, I often wished the kids would just shut up. Yes, their dialogue was cool and I still wished they'd be quiet and--do something. -Prepare- for things to fall through, not work, and stop being so whiny and self-centered. And yet--it's a realistic depiction of certain kinds of teenagers, so props to the author. I didn't like how often actors, especially musical theatre ones, were made fun of. I was one from ages eleven to nineteen, but not Carter-level at all. I was well-known in the company I was in, and that was it. Asked to audition for other stuff, but I couldn't make the auditions. That kind of thing. Onward. I haaated how Ben was portrayed, and the homophobia entwined with queer coding with Emme was also quite the sore spot for me. Sophie was an effective antagonist--hello, Teen Me, but to a slightly lesser extent. Emme was clearly a codependent--takes one to know one. Ordinarily I'd feel sympathy for a fellow codependent teen (I started showing symptoms around age twelve or something), but ugh, I wanted her to fail so spectacularly that she dropped out because I couldn't -stand- her as the book progressed. Oh, the cliches piled up. By the end, I gritted my teeth and practically growled. I was so glad the book finally ended. I'm still interested in the setting of performance arts academies with teenagers, so I'll seek out books that hopefully have different plots. A Time For Dancing--for years, I thought it -did- take place at a performing arts school, but not quite. It's hinted at. I'll read it after I finish another one I'm going through, and keep looking for good books. This wasn't for me.

It was cute and really nice.
But.
It left me feeling a little... drained. I'm not sure why.

Looking forward to seeing more of these characters! Hint, hint, just in case the author hadn't planned to go that route.... If I taught 3-5 grades, I would read this one outloud. Love the Holmes, Watson, Sir Arthur and Baker Street references

An interesting kidnapping victim finds out their real identity over a decade later story. Ally is applying for colleges when something goes wrong with her social security number. This one had lots of really emotional moments where you couldn’t help but sympathize with a lot of the perspectives. So many angles one could be hurt from in this scenario. I think my favorite character was the stepfather! Lots of Wisconsin tidbits that Packers fans will enjoy!

Please excuse typos/name misspellings. Entered on screen reader.

Somewhat predictable but still very entertaining - I blew through the book in a weekend. Ally is incredibly sympathetic, with an interesting cast of supporting characters. Solid YA that would be easy to recommend.

Super cute YA novel! The plot is a very basic version of P & P, which makes it a great choice for younger teens or to introduce Austen's characters.

I love Elizabeth Eulberg and she did not disappoint with this title. Her main characters are both strong and flawed which makes them believable and human. I could not put this book down until I'd finished it. Great story line and even better characters.

A teen retelling of Pride and Prejudice set at an elite boarding school where Lizzie has won a scholarship and is going through being harassed. She meets Will Darcy when he returns from London and both judge the other as lacking. Lizzie learns that what she thought is not true and Will learns new things as well.

I enjoyed this a lot. It had the frame of Pride and Prejudice but it is all modern teen age scenario. I liked Lizzie and Jane. Lydia was a brat. Darcy is not as aloof and is more down to earth. Wick is still a jerk, loser, and user when all is said and done. The story does well in contemporary days. I had fun reading this and did it in one sitting. Great book!
