The Obsidian Butterfly (The Age of the Seventh Sun, 3) von Lani Forbes
There is a lot going on. Every time the characters take one step forward, something happens to push them back. It felt like the story dragged sometimes because they were making no progress. I found some things predictable. But it is a good conclusion to the trilogy. The first book was the best.

The story alternates between the story of Mayana and Ahkin's travels through the underworld, and Yemania experiences I didn't enjoy the story of the travels through the underworld. Mayana and Ahkin realize how little the know each other. Ahkin learns a lesson. I got annoyed with Mayana and her acting without thinking.
I liked the story of Yemania as she meets a new love and has to deal with her brother.

The last 10% was really good. The rest was quite dull.
Essentially it was a drawn out "Does he like me?, "Does she like me for me or my crown? drama. The writing was clunky in places and nice in others. I was disappointed that the world was neglected in favour of the romance. I have read other reviews and see that there might be some own voice or not own voice issues. I don't know enough to comment but I do prefer to read own voices as it brings authenticity to the story.
To me it could have been set in space and it wouldn't have made a difference because the focus wasn't really on the world itself for the majority of the book. I found it disappointing that only the last part of the book really delved into the fantasy elements of the story.
Just not for me.

Fantasy based on Aztec & Mayan legends. Mayanna is kind-hearted and struggles with the sacrifices. It was really interesting in the beginning. The middle was a little slow. Than it built up to an exciting cliff hanger.
