Introductory Readings was designed as a second-semester text to follow a semester based on Fotos and Bray's German Grammar for Chemists and Other Science Students.

Text Selection: Texts are presented in order of new vocabulary introduced, based on some statistical computation. The selections themselves have not been edited for clarity.

Grammatical Apparatus: Both vocabulary and grammar are explained in extensive footnotes which may occupy half the page in the earlier part of the book. A 100-page glossary is at the end of the book, and 40 pages of grammatical discussion introduce the readings.

Subject Matter:
Pages 3-132 are taken from Stavenhagen's Kurzes Lehrbuch der anorganischen Chemie.
133-144 are from entries in Ullmann's Enzyklopädie der technischen Chemie.
Pages 145-189 are metallurgical articles from the journals Metallurgie and Stall und Eisen.
The final ten pages of readings are diagrams with explanatory text taken from Jakob and Euken's Der Chemie-Ingenieur.
Most of the text dates from the 1930s, but a couple of the metallurgical readings date from around 1912. The illustrations are large and attractive.… (mehr)
