Jamesie Fournier

The Other Ones by Inuk writer Jamesie Fournier is a very short read containing two short stories but it packs a real punch. In the first story, In the Net, a mother and daughter have found a hole in their fishing net. After they finish the repairs, the mother goes to bed. The daughter finds a piece of leftover netting and decides to create string figure with it, a skill her grandmother taught her. But her grandmother warned her to never do this late at night. The daughter shrugs this off as superstitious nonsense but she soon learns the consequences of disregarding her grandmother’s warning

In the second story, Before Dawn, a young boy is playing with his new friend. Issac. His mother has warned him to never venture past the inukshuk that can be seen on the horizon but Issac urges him on. But the further they run, the more Issac changes, becoming less human and a whole lot more scary.He makes a bargain with the boy. If he can get back home past the inukshuk by dawn, he will be safe. Otherwise, he is lost forever

Combining Inuit lore with horror, The Other Ones, Fournier has created two very unique, very creepy stories that are guaranteed to send chills down your spine. Full-colour pictures by Toma Felzo Gao complement the story perfectly, adding even more chills to the tales. A terrifyingly fun read. But more than that, it is an interesting glimpse at Inuit lore and made me want to read more.
