Tells the story of Daniel, a young Greek Jew who was part of the Sonderkommando in Auschwitz, the prisoners who were in charge of stripping and cremating dead bodies. In addition to telling Daniel's personal history (rather inadequately, I think; I really wish there had been more about his family and his background), the book also de-constructs the famous Sonderkommando revolt in 1944.

This would be of particular interest for those who want to know about Greek Jews and the Holocaust. There aren't many books on that subject, and the introduction here provides a brief but informative synopsis. As a memoir-by-proxy, though (told through Danny's interviews with the author), it's rather dry and unsatisfying.… (mehr)
