Rezensionen

This book encompasses the caring that is typified American Quakers humanitarianism since their first appearance in America. It documents the history of Quaker social action in America through compelling stories and underreported yet astonishing events, with insightful commentary on the intersection of religious belief and moral, civic action.

Susan Sachs Goldman, a past board member and Clerk (Chair) of Sidwell Friends School's Board of Trustees, and a parent of SFS alumnae, has written a very readable history of Quaker social activism.

Her involvement with the school's Quaker values dovetailed with her study of American history. In a discussion she led at Bethesda Friends Meeting, she said she felt the Quaker story of Friends relentless quest for social justice was one that begged to be told.

From Quaker work with Native Americans, their work for abolition, gender equality, prison reform, mental health advocates, to their unending work for peace through many wars, America has benefitted from its Quaker legacy.

It seems a shame that she did not find a trade publisher for this book.
