Told mostly in the words of the emigrants, as recorded in their journals.
Not a tremendous amount of background in the TV film itself, but considerable in the Special Features.

Well-made and inspiring. It's hard to reduce the early history of the LDS Church to a couple of hours, but concentrating on the westward trek of the pioneers made a good focal point.
I admire the stamina of the re-enactors portraying the handcart companies caught in the blizzards of Wyoming!
