This is a novella, where explanations are short, but this is one of those times where that is not a problem (it actually adds to the telling, rather than detracting). In the run up to her seventeenth birthday, lots of weird things start happening, leading to seeing her aunt with her face slashed. Her mother hurries her to the Van Dykes for protection, and Matt objects until she finds out what Bran has been up to since they last met (primarily turning into a really rather sexy 18 year old).

Mattalina and Bran then have to go on the run, trying to evade the people after them, and Mattalina soon learns what it's like to be a Story Teller, and memory is rarely reliable. Things her mother told her as stories when she was a child are in fact real, and it seems her family tried to protect her in the "Little Red Riding Hood" stories but to no avail (the colour red is important here).

Situations change, timelines move, and you never know who your friends really are. Since no time is needed or wasted setting up new worlds, then it is easy to shift between ages and scenarios and whilst this is a *tad* confusing, it's not to the detriment of the book - it'll be good to read other additions to this world.

If you want a short read of a book full of potential, this is it!

What I love most about the stories in AlmaMia Cienfuegos is being transferred to a whole new culture and feeling like I belong there. Magaly does not explain every detail but makes the ideas so clear that I intuitively understood.

This is a quick read but so filled with colour and passion that you will want to reread often.

From Lilac Wolf and Stuff

That beautiful cover is by Sunshine Shelle, you can find more of her work at her Etsy store. That was exciting to find out, her art has been featured on Magaly's blog for some time, and it's always haunting and cute. And we can all agree that's a tricky genre of art. And as a compliment to both, it gives this story a professional look.

The story itself is quite short, but full to bursting with emotion. You will finishing this story wishing you could bring AlmaMia home with you. She's such a young girl, and has such a horrid sister and mother. She actually lives with her grandmother, and hates to go home. I don't blame her, I'd rather be left alone rather than visit those 2 as well.

There is a super twist at the end that explains the sister and mother's behavior, somewhat. It's still unforgivable, but at least understandable.

The e-book is $1.99 at Amazon, which I think is a little steep for a short story. On the other hand, it's still only $2 and you know you are supporting the artist and not a publishing house. We are super spoiled with the low priced e-books. So, worth the price? You have to decide that one on your own but I would have been fine after reading the tale. It will stick with you.
