Walter is a dog that farts and they really smell. So bad in fact that they blow a beach umbrella away and now, the Crabs want Water banned from the beach. This book is lunacy in all the best ways. Yes, it’s body humor. Yes, it could be considered a little disgusting but it’s so fun and kids absolutely love it. I know and lived through the years of this book being banned and I’m like why? Why? Why? Why? I love this book, I think everybody should read it at least once, and I’m happy there are libraries that keep copies available for future generations to read.

Young children will appreciate the humor of a dog who smells so bad that he leaves chaos in his wake. Walter looks like a dog in distress, which adds to the funny moments of the book, of which there are plenty. The collages of Walter trying to make his way home make this a good choice for storytime.

49 months - It's a dog that farts... Of course it's a hit with the kids.

45 months- not my favorite illustration style but I give the author credit for appealing to kids with potty humor and a unique idea. Lots of funny parts and creative humor even if it's all based around flatulance (insert eye roll and a smile).

I ended up enjoying this book much more than I thought I would. Stick it out beyond all the foreshadowing as the narrator, an interior decorator for the rich, meets the family who take him along on their boat trip to the Caribbean. Once there, they are captured by modern-day pirates. Gregory is saved by a pig-like creature; their friendship is delightful. At one point, Gregory uses his flower arranging skills to disguise himself. Although he perfectly fits the stereotype of a gay decorator, English makes it possible for the gender of his loves to be left in doubt.

Because of his flatulence, Walter is banned from the beach and confined to the vacation home. But when his humans get marooned on a sandbar, Walter forgives the banning and comes to the rescue.

RESPONSE: Children think body humor is hilarious. So do many adults. This book weaves body humor together with a cute tale about accepting people's differences and "flaws." Illustrations have a unique style to them, but I think the main draw for kids is the farting dog.

THEMES: acceptance, courage, flatulence

A witty story about Walter the flagellant dog from the pound. Two kids fall in love with him and adopt him, but their family cant bring their selves to accepting him as part of the family. That is until Walter realizes the gravity of the situation and takes a personal oath never to fart again. This decision, as it turns out helps him to save the day, and convince his masters that he is, after all, an integral part of the family! A moral that teaches kids the importance of sticking together as a family and in learning to dealwith the personal defects of loved ones!

I can't say that I really loved this book but I want to read books that are out of my normal reading comfort zone and this one came highly recommended from my six year old nephew. I didn't find it very funny but I think I would have to read it aloud to see how younger children appreciate the humour.

This is another laugh aloud adventure of Walter the Farting Dog. This fifth installment by William Kotzwinkle et al is full of colourful, detailed computer generated art that shows off the story to its best advantage. Everyone knows a dog like Walter who means well, but often gets into trouble. Readers of all ages can enjoy the message about acceptance and unexpected help. Walter is a lovable character who stands the test of time. Dog lovers especially will enjoy this book that makes a great read aloud for just the right narrator.½

A gross humor book for kids. If you can get over the idea of saying fart over and over you'll love this book. Walter is aboard a cruise ship and cannot maintain his bodily functions. His farts smell so bad that they send him to the lower deck and even further on a little lifeboat behind the big cruiser. Although he is treated with much disrespect, Walter shows great personal confidence and does not lose face throughout the book. Ending up the savior, he farts enough to power the boat and becomes the hero.

A very funny book that features Walter, the farting dog. On the cruise ship, an odor spreads throughout and Walter is the culprit. He is sent down below in the ship to sit with the stinky cheeses, but eventually placed in a lifeboat to trail the ship, because he stinks so bad. The ship loses power and Walter, the ship, and all it's passenger are stuck in the high waves. But Walter found a way to save the day by eating and digesting the stinky cheese. The humor is this book's biggest strength.

Walter the farting dog has a slight but horrible gas problem that he cannot control. He and his owner family go on a cruise and his owners take him to the pet area on the ship. Because of Walter's gas problem, he is kicked out and put on a life boat behind the ship. Walter tries to control his gas as hard as he can.The ship then has mechanical problems and stuck at sea. When Walter finally cannot control his gas, he then propels the ship forward.

Grades 1-8. Its amazing what this author can do with something that seems so unacceptable in public. The dog definately can work miracles with his gas. Kids will love to see how walter does it again.½
