Mattias Hagberg takes a critical look at the Swedish penal system. This is an opinionated book that poses some very fundamental questions on the efficacy of prisons and what the purpose of prison sentences are. It punctures the myth that crime has increased severely during the last decades, and also discusses why, in spite of those facts, politicians have recently taken 'tough' stances on crime. However, the book consists mostly of criticism, devoting little space for constructive alternatives.
