The Rapture is the middle volume in the neo-noir alternate history Stone Trilogy, set in a near future United States and featuring private eye Felix Stone, veteran of the American Crusade to the Holy Land and the nuclear obliteration of Tehran.

The US is ruled by a right wing Christian fundamentalist Big Brotherhood: when undesirables start disappearing, Stone realizes it is not the much-bruited Rapture heralding the end of the world but a more sinister state-sanctioned programme of obliteration.

This book has the usual drawbacks of being in the middle, without a satisfactory beginning or ending, but I must admit Hall has a humorous turn of phrase and his view of a Yankee Christian dystopia makes for excellent reading.… (mehr)
