When I want an interesting but light paranormal mystery I read any series by this author. This series is the characters from her other series dealing with their magical children

The mc acts like a total jerk in the beginning and can't handle the echo but the author believes it's as much the victim's fault somehow as it is hers.
That irritated me. A lot. If you are a jerk you are not entitled to polite responses regardless of your gender. That's what equality means.

There were multiple incredibly awkward apologetical conversations reminiscent of grade school teachers forcing children to apologize to each other but then they suddenly can not stop apologizing. I understand that it is meant humorously but it misses the tone and is grossly overdone and frankly just cringeworthy, not funny.
This seems to be a general theme, cringeworthy and extremely stilted heart to heart conversations. I will never understand what people get out of these because they are everywhere. Do other people really have conversations like that? Maybe I am just weird.

The characters are just not well-written in general.
Some less important characters suffer 180° personality-switches out of nowhere and no one thought it weird or remarked about it for example.

I usually like this kind of nature witch theme and bantery dialogue, and this spark of attraction but the bad character work and sometimes poor dialogue, as well as awfully overplayed stereotypes, just spoiled it for me.
dnf around 50%

This one is mediocre for the most part.
The biggest sins are a lot of different plot conveniences and the typical mid-battle tactical timeout to have a conversation absurdity.
The family dynamic around the MC actually is quite well done.
It feels real and I can understand the motivations from different perspectives which sadly is quite rare.
But the rest is just not good enough. It's actually quite weird how this select part can feel so well done while the other characters are very shallow.
This is my third book by this author and I have yet to give more than 2 stars but this one came the closest.
I will probably avoid her for now but I will probably stumble over something new and interesting by her eventually.

Great story

This read like a suspense ministry instead of a cozy ministry but it was an excellent book with excellent writing along with it

The pity party with Ivy and Jack that lasted a few chapters was NOT endearing (and very much unnecessary--if conflict was needed, fine, but this was not it) and it almost ruined the book for me. If I didn't have my own personal rule of finishing what I start, I would have given up and given this book no higher than a 2. It did get better, thankfully, but too much was ruined because of that.

Once again, the author is intent on reminding us how great Ivy and Jack are together (ok, we get it). If more time was spent on the actual plot, this would be worthy of a 4 or 5 star rating, because the author is definitely a good writer and I see so much potential here.

Wicked Days

Wicked Days starts with a typical beginning: a guy moves to a small town as a change from a life changing event. The story is written so that every character is trying to set the main character up with his counter part Ivy, which is both humorous yet at times a little much. The mystery component however makes the book hard to put down leaving to an ending that leaves the reader guessing until the characters find out themselves.

Not entirely predictable

I was glad to see Maddie doing a reading. One thing I think could have been done better would have been mentioning the cards. Am I the only one who figures that if she's supposed to be a reader, Hart should have looked up enough about Tarot to include it. (Not so much that it would confuse people who didn't understand it.) When she sees the "disturbing" layout, and it looks awful and she says "big changes", I assume what she'd have seen was Death, and maybe The Tower. The woman who was being read for would clearly have seen the cards and have had to have the interpretation explained. There's no reason not to take advantage of the system she's using. And it rather bugs me also that she doesn't seem to have to work more than two or three half days a week to meet expenses. (and the police seem to have very flexible hours as well.)

One of the things I like best about this series is the huge variety of the ghosts Maddie encounters. This thoroughly unlikable purvy Santa is just another. It looks like he may be hanging around, and I wouldn't mind his popping up occasionally as walk-on character.
I'd also like to see more of Marla, although while she's enjoyable as a nemesis, she's remained undeveloped for far too long. Cassidy is far more complex, if less amusing.
I'm put off by Maddie being a "professional psychic" who never seems to keep her store open, nor hang around her tent at festivals. It seems to me that that would frustrate the heck out of her clientele.

Has anyone else tried to figure out where Blackstone Lake is, or is it just me?
Whenever someone in a story says "40 minutes to the outskirts of Traverse City" or "I can go to Gaylord or Traverse City if I want to shop", I go over to Google Maps and try to figure out where it is. My best guess at this point is in the vicinity of Kalkaska- lots of lakes and woods there, but it seems too big- Rapid City maybe.

Well it's about time! (for the trial)
With the number of murder investigations she's been involved with, you'd think Maddie would have had to testify before this! Frankly, the fact that she seems to have been involved in a murder mystery every couple of months, would lead me to think she's got a LOT of court appearances coming up. Saying the mystery is solved may be fine for a story, but one assumes that how to testify must be one of the things they taught Nick in police academy, and being prepped by the prosecutors seems like something that would happen a lot.
I have to admit that I went back and re-read Grave Homecoming so I'd remember better what happened. Sounded like while he was going
I'd like to see more of Harris, he seems like he might develop into a solid character. One of the best things about a long series like this is to have old characters pop up in later books in logical ways.
I want to see more of Maude and the Pink Ladies. We should have had more than hints by now, and sooner or later Harriet is going to demand retribution.

Maybe I should put this in the fantasy section simply because of impossible math in the fortune telling scene!
In four hours she took in two thousand dollars?
In an earlier book she charged Marla $50 for a reading. At the $50 rate, she would have had to do ten readings an hour- and given the very minimum of a minute for getting the old butt out of the chair and the new butt in, that's $50 for a 5 minute reading.
Most of us on the fair circuit do 15 minute readings- usually between $25 and 50 depending on where.
I do know psychics who get $250 for a reading- for an hour.
$50 for a 15 minute reading is very good, but frankly, out in the boonies, I doubt that's the going rate, maybe in Detroit. Even at $50 each 15 minutes, that would only have been $800 for her afternoon. Does Hart really think we aren't going to do the math?!
I'm also getting sick of psychopaths and sociopaths; how about a good old crime of passion or a real jackass who isn't mentally ill?

Gut wrenching tension

I came for the magic and romance, but the mystery kept me reading faster. Any is a great new character, complex and not AS annoying as I expected. I hope she loses the giggle, though, I never like any character who giggles past infancy.

So, I enjoyed this book because it is a very light easy listen. The characters are slightly annoying, but I still liked them and was invested in their story. The mystery was pretty predictable, and the ending was a little drawn out, but the story was still enjoyable. I didn’t buy the romance side of the story, but I will have to see how well the author handles them in the next book.

The characters have an easy chemistry with each other and I really enjoyed feeling like Jared – a newcomer who is suddenly dropped into the town of Whisper Cove and not sure how to handle it. Most of the supporting characters are the heart of this story and make the book so much better. The main character Harper seems well developed but the author did not develop the character of Jared at all.

My least favorite thing about the story is the lack of maturity between Zander and Harper. I feel like the author watched way too many episodes of “Will and Grace” and decided every interaction between the two friends should be sarcastic, rude and completely lack of emotional development.

Angel Clark is not a great narrator for this story. These characters already have a certain level of immaturity about them, but the narrator makes them sound like 12 years olds pretending to be adults in their mid-20s. This is one of the few times I felt like the narrator was a detriment to the book.

friendship, family-dynamics, paranormal, ghosts, murder-investigation, fun

Harper interacts with ghosts, Zander is her BFF since kindergarten/business partner/gay housemate, Mel is the longtime local cop/Zander's uncle, Jared is the new-to-town hot detective who doesn't believe in ghosts, and Annie is the murder victim who can't remember whodunit. Add in more zany characters and some plot twists plus lots of laughs and you have this very fun book!
Angel Clark is the perky narrator who doesn't crack up during the performance.

Shadow Lake adds a new detective the police department, he is Jack Harper a burnt-out Detroit detective looking for a little peace in a small town where nothing really happens. A town where he can be alone!

Instead on his first day on the job, he is called to Ivy Morgan’s house as she has found a body at the end of her driveway. Now Jack is caught up in a murder investigation and a romance with a witch, which neither party wants but are drawn into by attraction.

A light cozy which is relaxing to read.

readable but very short - suddenly cuts off when I was expecting more pages (you can't see so easily on Kindle....)
Veyr predictable, but also some funny lines in there. Although no one could possibly come up with that many good lines in real life, but then we have a character who can talk to ghosts so how realistic was the author trying to be?
