I really liked this book, which paints a very interesting picture of what it's like to grow up as an adopted Chinese girl in Canada. I'd prefer the plot to have remained with one character, rather than unevenly splitting it between three, but I found this a great realistic, contemporary YA unlike what else is out there.

Faye was adopted from China by Canadian parents. Bev is a friend from childhood, back in town and pregnant. Mannie is the baby daddy who doesn't want their baby to be adopted. They wrestle with their inner demons, trying to push past stereotypes. Quiet, introspective prose, but ehhh...

I really hate to have negative feedback regarding an early review copy. Realizing the author put a lot of hope and energy into his/her work, it is difficult to say I really didn't like the book. But, in all honesty, that is the case with this one.

A YA tale of three teenagers whose lives are intersected in misconstrued ways left the story hanging unevenly.

Bev, young, confused raised by a very off the wall mother and a non-caring father becomes pregnant before she is a senior in highschool. Seeking help, she randomly connects with a Chinese friend whom she knew when she was eight years old. Her friend was adopted and perhaps that is why she is reaching out. Mannie the father of the child is incredibly inmature, would rather smoke pot than find a way to help Bev or try to get a job to financially assist.

I really don't like books that skip from chapter to chapter with varying people telling their part of a story. And, this is primarily why I find fault with the book. There is an illusion to the title early in the book, yet this is not followed through.

The segway between one chapter or character to the next seems non existant.

Overall, I finished it because I started it, but really cannot recommend it at all. My apologies to the author, but truly there needs to be more consistency.

I'm not really sure where I'm at on this one. It was an easy quick read and had my attention off and on throughout. There were just times I felt the whole flow was off and it irritated me a bit. All in all it was an okay book but I can't give it a glowing review.
