Jillian Haslam

Wonderfully written, but make sure you have some tissues nearby, there are both heartbreaking and heartwarming moments in these pages. Jillian is such a strong woman, and has survived so much. A truly inspirational story, there are obstacles that she has overcome that many of us will never face. A stark reminder that things are far from equal in this world, while still providing hope for those who are struggling, this is a must-read for anyone who enjoys emotional memoirs. I am left completely in awe of how far Jillian has come, and how much good she has done in this world.… (mehr)

Reading INDIAN.ENLISH was a frightening reminder of the horrors many people face every day even in our modern times. Haslam and her family were subjected to terrible discrimination and poverty because of deep seated racial prejudices against them in India. The book lacked the polish and details of a novel, but as a memoir certainly projected the abominable conditions Haslam grew up in. As was her intent, there was a positive message as well. Despite all the trials of her life, Haslam retained a positive attitude, recognized the kindness of people (some of whom were as poor as her family) and maintained a deep love for her family. She was proof that one can rise above one’s past.
