From the Preface: James Tice Phillips (1887-1960) collected over 1700 items of Hawaiiana while living and working in Hawaii from 1916 to 1951. His collection was sought after by numerous private collectors and university libraries when it was put up for sale in 1962 by the San Francisco rare book dealer, Warren R. Howell. But Howell believed the collection should be returned to Hawaii, and arranged a deal with the Friends of the Hawaiian Library to purchase the collection. Matson Navigation Company transported the collection, weighing more than a ton, free of charge.
NOTE: The label, "The James Tice Phillips Collection," was pasted on the front cover and on the title page, which made me wonder, especially after one library in New Zealand listed the title of the catalogue as "The John Tice Phillips Collection." So I carefully lifted the label off of the front cover and, sure enough, the title printed on the front cover and title page was "The John Tice Phillips Collection."… (mehr)
