The book is separated into ten chapters:
- Introduction to backpacking in the US
- Preparation
- National Parks
- Wilderness
- Mountain ranges
- Coasts
- Deserts
- Urban experiences
- Safety and survival skills
- Environment responsibilities

The book provides a lot of advice on when to go, obtaining permits, planning the route, and packing clothes, food, and water. The book lists popular locations for backpackers to explore, such as the Glacier National Park and The Oregon Coast, and reasons to visit. There are also suggestions for trekking locations around the area, such as The John Muir Trail and Park Loop Road. This is a good guide to refer back to when backpacking.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
