2113 Europe in the Middle Ages Second Edition, by Robert S. Hoyt (read 3 Dec 1987) This was published in 1966 and is apparently designed for a college text. But it is a far better text than I used in college, and furthermore it is in no way objectionable from a Catholic standpoint. It covers from 400 AD to 1500 AD and I particularly thought the earlier years were better covered than I have been familiar with. Maybe it is just that I am better read in the later part of the Middle Ages, but the later chapters seemed too "surveyish." I thought the coverage of the so-called barbarian invasions was instructive--they weren't often hordes of barbarians rolling over pastoral areas. The book spends a lot of time on culture, architecture, philosophy, etc. This was a very good book.
