Another of the excellent Embers of Empire series, this one set in the reign of Valentinian I, who, as written here, seemed no prize. Marcus is involved, from the murder of a Quadi king, delivering a fiancée to the emperor-to-be, Gratian, revenge by the Quadi, and uprooting evil councilors and generals who plot to install Gratian's younger half-brother as emperor. The middle-aged Marcus embroils himself in politics and is nearly assassinated while attempting to foil his enemies. A good evocation of this historical period, late 4th century AD.… (mehr)

Another excellent entry in the Embers of Empire series. This whole series is worth reading. Marcus travels to Roman Africa to find out the truth about provincials' complaints of imperial corruption and why nothing is being done about it. They are also suffering from the attacks of a barbarian tribe the Austoriani. Also, Marcus is ordered by the emperor to spy on General Theodosius, who is coming to lead the army, aiming to put down the rebellion of a Berber prince. The officer was a horrible man, and I disliked him intensely. The story was set as a flashback, which Marcus tells a visitor, called herein only the Antiochian. I could scarcely believe that so many incidents were actually true--"stranger than fiction." I thought the maps a nice touch, also the author's material after the novel itself. I thank the publisher for sending me an ARC. I was quite happy to rate and review the book as I did.… (mehr)

Political intrigue in Rome set against the background of the blood purges of the 5th century AD. Marcus's wife is caught up in the urban prefect's net as accessory to so-called treason. Another exciting Marcus Gregorianus Numidianus novel. The author states in the Historical Note that this whole series has been based on the writings of Ammianus Marcellinus, the contemporary historian of that era. The title refers to a special rope and box in which people are encouraged to accuse others of crime.

Another exciting action/adventure in this series. Marcus himself goes undercover to Britannia to find his agens Benedictus and also to gather intelligence for Count Theodosius, who wants to clean up the situation in Britannia. Sea raiders have come there from all directions and are laying waste to the island and its people. Emperor Valentinian is paying no attention to his British possession; he's fixated on fighting and defeating a Germanic tribe. Marcus discovers in Britannia more than he reckoned with--a rogue arcanus, a conspiracy along with a home-grown usurper, Valentinus, who plans to rule the island himself. All or part of the island will be renamed "Valentia". Marcus' escape from the gold mine had my heart in my mouth.

Very highly recommended. One of the better in the series.
