A very interesting work, arguing the thesis that the Iroquois were not in fact the dramatically successful conquorors of 19thC mythology, but rather were on the verge of extinction -- or at least migration westwards -- when the French arrived, and that their power was a product of a very unusual sort of economic symbiosis with the French, English, and (briefly) Dutch and others. Well worth reading for pretty much anyone, regardless of prior interest in the Iroquois or much of anything else.
