Keith Jacobsen had followed up his popular Place of a Skull with a novel of faith and betrayal. Wrapped up as a mystery that unravels across Italy, Oxford and the west of Ireland he tracks the interplay between characters of touching faith both personal and religious and their exposure to a man character with none. The central figure Hasan is neither principled nor particularly and people regularly invest their faith in him. Hasan’s faith is firmly and exclusively invested in mathematics and reason. The betrayals ripple out from Hasan and infect all of the characters. Murder, illegitimacy, forbidden and unacknowledged love, and religious faith all come under Mr Jacobsen’s intense gaze and, through his complex characters he finally leads the reader to a better understanding and a kind of resolution. Whether he leads the reader or the characters to redemption is at the heart of the mystery herein.

Carefully plotted and peopled with believable, fully rounded characters Mr Jacobsen has pulled of another moral tale dressed up in a readable mystery story.

Taking a step back, I have to say this is a probably a well-written book for those able to identify with the characters in the book. The setting (Ireland through the unrest/IRA attacks) I, however, just couldn't make a connection with the characters or the topic. The first third was particularly grueling as there wasn't much in the way of action -- it was mostly reminiscing about how the past conspired to reach the current predicament.

Seamus and his father were executioners in the IRA. They were betrayed, Seamus escaping while his dad was captured. Vowing vengeance on the informant, it slowly become apparent that this drama is "All in the Family."

From the start, I could not make a sympathetic connection with the killer Seamus, or his conspirator priest for that matter. Others seem to love it though, so consider your interest in the topic and setting before picking this one up.

Keith Jacobsen has wrought an original and well explored novel here out of the ruins of The Troubles in Northern Ireland and the lives of his protagonists. In a finely paced narrative set in the rubble strewn peace he explores the relationship between the people and the situation. The fact that one is left unsure as to the arrow of causality is testament to the deep and broad way in which Francis works his way through a seemingly simple tale of revenge and retribution. In point of fact the supposed simplicity is revealed as remarkably complex and nuanced and it is to his credit that none of the author's major characters is two dimensional but each instead is a fully rounded human with some serious history.

There is no heavy handed polemic in this tightly written tale and one is left still puzzling about how such things can happen and how such people are wrought. A fine project and a fine piece of writing.

I rated this book as five star partly because it is the first book that I have read for ages that I simply couldn't put down! The story is fascinating, following the central character from childhood through to at least middle age. It is not a happy story but it is gripping, well written and not at all predictable. Characters are well developed and interesting - I particularly liked Father Gerald and the bald man, who both appear and disappear throughout the book rather than being one of the constant characters throughout. I loved Place of a Skull and will definitely read other novels by this author.… (mehr)
