Über den Autor
Horst Waldemar Janson was born on October 4, 1913 in St. Petersburg, Russia. He studied at the University of Munich and the University of Hamburg. He came to the U.S. and finished his Ph. D at Harvard University in 1942. He is a scholar of art history known for his book History of Art which was mehr anzeigen published in 1962. He taught at Worcester Art Museum and the University of Iowa. He authored two award winning books Apes and the Ape Lore in the Middle Ages and The Renaissance and Sculpture of Donatello. A Survey of the Major Visual Arts from the Dawn of History to the Present Fay
Dnes, kdy moderní dopravní prostředky umožňují širokému okruhu zájemců navštěvovat slavná světová muzea a galerie a kdy není problémem vydat se za významnými památkami minulých epoch stoupá neustále poptávka po stručných průvodcích a přehledných příručkách o dějinách umění. Lidé se chtějí rychle poučit o slohových epochách, o uměleckých směrech, národních školách i o nejslavnějších osobnostech z dějin výtvarné kultury.
Kniha manželů Jansonových byla napsána pro mládež. Poslouží ovšem dobře i dospělým návštěvníkům výstav a galerií. O potřebnosti a popularitě této nevelké publikace svědčí okolnost, že vyšla nejen v Americe, ale že si ji přeložili také Francouzi, Němci, Holanďané a Jugoslávci. Není to knížka náročná, nepouští se do hlubších analýz, chce pouze stručně připomenout, jak ve sféře západoevropské kultury vyjadřovali malíři svůj vztah ke světu a kteří geniální tvůrci udávali v tomto vztahu hlavní tón. Autoři připomínají hlavní směry vývoje od skalních maleb doby kamenné, památek egyptských, řeckých a římských přes malířství středověku, renesance a baroka až po tvorbu doby dnešní. Zvlášť velkou výhodou textu je, že se vztahuje přímo k reprodukcím uvedeným v knize. Je tu vyobrazeno - průběžně - celkem 245 děl, z toho 32 barevně… (mehr)
