Intended for young adult readers, this is a fast paced story based on the exploits of Confederate officer, John S. Mosby in north-west Virginia. The hero of the novel is a 16 year old boy who joins Mosby's command and participates in actions during the Confederate buildup to Gettysburg.
The author makes every effort to dampen the glory aspects of war by showing how unpleasant life for partisans fighting behind enemy lines can be. Then there is the hovering, constant, danger and then the pain and horror associated with being wounded. While telling the amazing story of the Confederate hero Mosby, Icenhower makes it clear war destroys the lives and property of the innocent civilians and is no picnic for the soldiers either.… (mehr)
