Can I keep saying that I'm not normally a Sci-Fic reader but this isn't a typical Sci-Fic book. Although I'm still disappointed that the characters from the first story aren't continued in this book, but the characters from the 2nd & 3rd books soon had me immersed in the continuing storyline and the strong characters that the author develops. This story, as does her first two, leaves you wanting more, and now that I'm done with this book I have to wait for her next one to be published, but great news I got an email today saying that the next book is in the process of rewrite, so it's close!

Lyric is an orphan with clumsiness issues, a tortured childhood and ADHD. I loved her from the moment we meet her quirky self. Abused by her drunk mother and berated constantly, she dropped out of school once her mother's liver gave up the ghost from years of alcohol abuse. She has an interesting affinity for the young redwood trees in her town, almost like she knows how they feel? But maybe that's just her inner crazy talking. Always a loner since the kids at school constantly ridiculed her, books and the trees are her friend. She also doesn't really remember much from her childhood as she locked down all her trauma. So the one night one off her ex schoolmates invited her to a beach bonfire she wondered "what it..." . If only she'd listened to the odd inner voice not only begging her NOT to go to work that night (where she ran into her ex classmates), but also not to go to the beach. How was she to know her entire life would change. Jury is still out whether it's for the better or worse. Attacked my something her mind just can't believe she awakens to learn EVERYTHING has changed. Suddenly she's whisked off to Atlantis Academy where magic exists and so do descendents from Atlantis. Supposedly she's one of them? Everything is far from peaches and cream with psycho supernatural law enforcement after her, New abilities choking her, a new set of evil queen bees, and all around craziness. Yet through it all Lyric keeps her sense of self, huge heart and stands her ground. I cannot wait to see what's next for her! I have a feeling her white knight might not be such a stranger....I'm guessing he's linked to her childhood necklace...but I've been wrong before

This short story has consistency. The setting and action make the story gripping. Issues of this world are carried with the colonists and add interest to the story by playing out in a different setting. The writing is flawless.

"Defect," showcases the wonderful talent of author Autumn Kalquist. She's mastered that easy, seemingly effortless, way of telling a tale that pulls you into the story immediately. The world-building is fantastic and the characters are ones that I definitely want to learn more about. If you're looking for a great sci-fi/apocalyptic read, you'll definitely want to check out this new series.

This was a wonderful book. I'm completely blown away. I was also brought to tears. I immediately downloaded the next book. I can't give this higher praise. The songs, the story, the characters are all beautifully done. Autumn is a phenomenal writer and singer/songwriter.

"Defective" by Autumn Kalquist is a great book to introduce you to her Fractured Era Saga, if you haven't had the pleasure of reading this wonderful author by now. Autumn has created a fantastic world that is totally believable and completely mesmerizing. She is one of the few scifi writers that has actually brought me to tears and makes me feel for her characters so much, that I become immersed in her stories for days. This book is one that will pull you in and make you a part of its world and its people, and the great part of it is, there are many more books in this series to be enjoyed once you're done. Oh, and did I mention, the artwork on the cover is absolutely stunning?

I freely chose to review this ARC as I'm a HUGE fan of this author, and her books never let me down yet as the books just keep getting better and better I hate to lose the friends I made in the stories! The early twenty-first century resulted in a pandemic plague that killed billions of people until The Coalition arose like a phoenix from the ashes with a cure to genetically modify babies who were immune. Every parent wanted their children to be protected until a discovery turned a blessing into a curse!

Four stories are told in this book; Anders, the daring son of the Coalition sheriff who turned his best friend over to be caged. Selene who is a Protected and lived off grid in Telmont, Georgia with her younger brother and Lydia who resecured them from Seattle and took them to live off grid when her parents were murdered and she longed to be free, Katherine the head of Inifitek who had control and power over every nation that survived in her hands, and Haven is a group of trained soldiers that fight to regain a democratic control , but they have to stay under the radar of the Coalition who wants them held for treason. All this in book one and I can't wait to read the rest of the trilogy!!

This book was, by no means, perfect, but I enjoyed the character development and the idea. I bought it as an ebook bundle, so was caught by surprise when the story ended, but was not disappointed at all with how it ended.

Book one of Legacy Code is Era and Dristan Corinth's story of their life on the starship Paragon. The survivors of Earth had been searching for a new planet 300 years ago. Era is asked to replaced the old Archivist while Dristan is sent with his maintenance crew were rotated down to the toxic planet Soren while Era worries about her unborn child having the defect. The survivors had been told that thanks to genetic modification to solve Earth's problems but it only made it worse. When Ea heard the rumor that her baby could be fixed if it was defective she does the unthinkable............

What an awe inspiring tale that pulls at your heart strings as Era fights for her child that must be aborted as supplies are limited and must be used for the healthy. Ms. Kalquist will make you want to read more and I can't wait to read the next book!!

Fun, quick read. Fast paced sci-fi of the remnants of humanity. Well written, good character development and storyline, especially given how short this book is. Recommend for young adult and older.

Received book via publisher for review.

I was a little confused by the story. At first, it seems that I needed a before hand story of what was going on. Why are they in space? What happened to Earth? And not much character info. Read it very fast. Different take on a life in space.

Well structured dystopia, however lacks a certain kind of technical depth (probably intentionally so).

Overall a dark perspective, I am guessing it is setting the stage for another book and another character. Not quite my type

70% - might read other titles by author

"Hope's a dying star.
We need a supernova.
To wipe space clean,
And just start over again."

What happens when you discover that everything you believed in is all a big lie?

Era is such a strong main character. When she wants something, she'll do her best to get it. She's brave and I'm proud of her because she doesn't want anybody take her child away from her though it allegedly has Defect.

I liked the relationship between Era and Ditran. What they have is genuine love for each other. I liked their version of saying they love each other by squeezing each other's hands three times. It felt different because sometimes words, spoken repeatedly, doesn't mean anything anymore.

This was really short that I finished it fast and because of that, I cannot find anything to say anymore. For those people who wants to read about a good futuristic, sci-fi novel, I recommend this book to you guys. This ends with a cliffhanger. Ugh. There are so many questions that were left unanswered and because of that I'll definitely read the next book. ^_^

This book, which takes place 300 years before Legacy Code, introduces us to Selene, her brother Eli, and their "Nan". Selene and Eli are Protecteds, which in essence means they'll never get sick. Selene considers herself and Eli to be more defective than Protected. We learn that the three of them have been living off-grid for the past 8 years, and they are very self-sufficient - canning lots of food so they won't be affected by food shortages. Selene worries that they will be found, but we're not told much about how or why they became Protecteds, why Selene feels defective, or who may be looking for them.
This was an enjoyable quick read and I'm hoping the next installment will shed light on these questions.
**I received a complimentary copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.**

At first I didn't think that I would enjoy this book, but I'm so glad I continued reading it! The main characters were likeable and I found myself rooting for them. I could totally see myself reacting the same way Era did to her difficult circumstances. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys "Star Treky" sci-fi.
**SPOILERS AHEAD**
The ending was so sad! First Dritan gets killed in a mining accident and then poor Era is murdered for committing treason. The stage is set for a sequel and I'm looking forward to finding out what happens next. I so hope that the colonists discover the secret about the defect. Getting that information out meant so much to Era that she was willing to die over it. It would be so very sad if she died in vain.
