As I dimly recall, I engaged with this work back before fantasy was replaced by a more satisfactory reality involving an actual member of the opposite sex. The plot, such as it was, involved a Mrs. Coates who, having aged to the point where her own attributes no longer allowed her to earn her living in the time-honored (if unrespectable) way, opened a lucrative bordello, where the eponymous Mary was involuntarily given employment. Among Mary's misfortunes were to be subjected to couplings of every imaginable sort, with no regard to gender or even numbers; though it truth be known, she gained enjoyment in spite of her pleadings and the vigorous punishments exerted upon her nubile form. I fail to recall the denouement, but the minimal summaries available online indicate that the ending is a sad one. From that, I infer that perhaps the bordello was forced to close and Mary entered a nunnery. Though published in 1958, this work bore the style of old-fashioned erotica of decades earlier.… (mehr)
