John Lardner wrote this in 1942 as a means of educating Americans about what life and war in and around Australia was like for American servicemen. He does a pretty effective job of it, particularly when he focuses on individuals' stories. Most moving was the brief description of Bataan and Corregidor, including the eight Army nurses evacuated on his ship. I perked up at the description of Dorothea Daley in particular, later played by Claudette Colbert in So Proudly We Hail (I'm assuming her name was changed for that?).

I bought the book for the illustrations, and then read it straight trough. Short stories of the boxing ring and the baseball diamond. Mostly making fun of odd characters in a way unthinkable in the PC world of today.
The Willard Mullin illustrations are many, they're great examples of dynamism in art, and they all suit the stories perfectly.½
