Although Legge was very much a creature of his time, his witty voice shines through this deeply academic review of the religious environment of the Classical world around the origin of Christianity. He holds prejudices about some racial groups but he is not hostile to them. The analysis of the cultural influences on religious thought avoids detailed theology. It is a brilliant review of the material.
