I was undecided in how many stars to give this book. On one hand I enjoyed the historical perspective even more than I normally would because it is set in my hometown and tells the story of the first colony families in the Mat-Su valley, many of whom I know their relatives. I t was to recognize names as I read the book. On the other hand it isn't the best historical fiction novel I've read, as a matter of fact if it weren't for the actual content I would have definitely only given it one or two stars. The the strengths of the story are in the descriptions of Alaska and the homesteaders sense of community, the weaknesses are the plot ( not much of one ) and the pithy way it's told. A much less compelling Little House on the Prairie came to mind. There are no other fiction (chapter) books for children set in the Mat-Su that I'm aware of so I am glad I read it.

Curricular connection - In 4th grade we teach community and Alaska history so this would be a very appropriate novel to read.

Then Paul meets tomboyish Maggie and adventurous Erik, also kids of new colonists, and together they face the unique realities of living in the far north. Based on true stories, follow the trials and adventures of Paul, Maggie, and Erik as their families start over in hopes of building a new life in a strange land so far away. Will they make it?… (mehr)
